The Great Cheese Steak Debate

Line of stars under the headline

Cheese Steak

Photo by Edward Savaria, Jr - Philadelphia is known for its cheesesteaks. The first cheesesteak, thinly sliced rib-eye steak on fresh Italian bread with onions and cheese, was served in 1930.

The Famous Philadelphia Cheese Steak: A classic combination of sliced steak, onions and cheese wiz, creates a sandwich like no other. Many have tried to imitate, but an authentic Cheese Steak can be found no where else in the world! There is one question that still remains, and it is one that will be forever debated: Where can you find the very best Cheese Steak in Philadelphia?

The Major Contenders: Pat’s and Geno’s. This heated south Philly rivalry will never end. In very close proximity each of these thriving businesses sells Cheese Steaks to the hungry people of Philadelphia all night long. In fact, here's a video debate between these two giants.

Other key players in the Cheese Steak debate: Jim’s and Tony Luke’s. Some Philadelphians even say these Cheese Steaks give Pat’s and Geno’s a run for their money. Is there another local Cheese Steak joint that may serve up the most delicious Cheese Steaks in town? Perhaps the best kept secret of Philadelphia?

To each his own… right? Well what’s your favorite?

Evolution of a NE Philly Boy's Favorite Steak
By Scullyano

Back in high school (early 90s) there was no doubt about it. Pat's was the King of Steaks. But our taste buds change over time; and for the record, I'm no flip-flopper!

During college I somehow was drawn across the street and became a "Geno's Guy." I lost the cheese and went "Steak Wit' (onions).

My horizons were broadened once again around the time I entered the real world. My taste buds became set on Jim's on South Street. I can't go to an Eagles' game without one of his steaks.

Jim's is still #1 to me, but there are a couple places close to home (Bucks Co.) that need a mention. Steve's Prince of Steaks in Langhorne and Steak & Hoagie Works in Bensalem are worthy substitutes when I need a nearby steak fix.

You know the saying, When in Rome... Well, when in Philly a steak is a must and understanding the proper terminology before ordering is essential: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cheesesteak#Cultural_etiquette.

Learn the local lingo and enjoy the tasty results!

Steve's is fantastic as well

Went to Steve's this past summer (live in Colorado now), and the steaks were great! Steaks themselves are ~2"x5" slices, not chopped steak like Pat's or Geno's. www.stevesprinceofsteaks.com

(I do not work for Steve's).

No Comparison Pat's vs. Geno's

Being somewhat new to the city of Philadelphia, I have had the honor of trying both Pat's and Geno's. My wonderful co-worker and I split half a steak "wiz wit" at Pat's, fries and all, then crossed the street, and had the same "wiz wit" at Geno's. In my mind, there is NO comparison. Pat's is MUCH better and then some. Everything from the bread, the cheese, the oinions and THE STEAK....Pat's is my winner.

The BEST Steak in Philly!

I was born and raised in Philadelphia, and over my lifetime I have had the great opportunity to try many of the city's finest steaks. Although I enjoy steaks from all of Philadelphia's finest sandwich shops, the BEST steak in Philadelphia remains Steve's Prince of Steak's in the good old North East. Followed closely behind by Pat's, and Campo's in Old City.

Steve's Prince Reigns Supreme!

Being from Northeast Philly, I have to agree with tscotter that Steve's Prince of Steaks is the best. It's a little different if you're used to chopped meat, but in my opinion, it's even better!

Here is my Philly Top 5:

1. Steve's Prince of Steaks(NE Philly)

2. Geno's Steaks (South Philly)

3. Pat's King of Steaks (South Philly)

4. Jim's Steaks (South Street)

5. Dalessandro's (Roxborough)

Now I'm hungry!!

BF is a N philly boy, he likes

Dalessandro's; howeva, he

has instructed me exactly in how to create the beast. The very best meat, fresh red peppers sauteed with sweet onion, use American white cheese to melt and add just a tad of Heintz Ketchup to the meat, pepper and onion mix,...but the bread is everything....a long crusty baguette sliced in half slighted toasted.....

Carts!

I've held for years that Geno's steaks and Pat's fries are the combo to go with from the touristy steak spots, but for a *real* steak, the steak the *locals* buy, you can't beat the lunch carts!

If you're gonna be a tourist, then go with Geno's steaks and Pat's fries, every time!

However, if you want to have a real, quality, no-fuss, delicious steak... the kind the *locals* eat on a daily basis... you HAVE to go to a lunch cart! Those little silver carts all over the city are gems, some better than others, but that's the real deal.

Every visiting friend I've ever taken for steaks, I've taken to Pats, Geno's, and then a lunch cart. Every single one, without exception, goes nuts for the steak from the cart. It's just the real deal!

Now for Cheesesteak I can not say there is one great place in Philadelphia.

I have found seven I do prefer that need more free publicity.

Abners

Bills Deli

Chinks

Chubbies

DIMITRI'S ITALIANO

Pagenos

Oh this place is fantastic after any sporting event

Tony Lukes

When Al and Richard come to town I plan on having them take me to all these places and many more and buy steak subs for the first 500 people who email each of us and address it also to the newspapers and the mayor and the Governor.

That is 1500 wonderful cheesesteaks.

Albert and Richard have tons of money to spend. It now is up to you all. The ball is in your hands, do you fumble or do you run it in for the winning Touchdown.

By Ara

The best cheesesteak in Philadelphia is actually neither Geno's or Pat's. Rather, it's Abner's.

Thank you sir for the tics

My son plays for the Army blacknight and he could only get four tickets for his family members of seven. My husband has been in the Navy for nearly 20 years and we have 3 boys and 2 girls. So being the strong women we are, we decided the guys would go and the ladies would tailgate. As my daughters and I were standing outside the gates watching the big screen, a kind man ask why aren't you inside. I told him my son was not able to get us all tics to the sold out game. He then reached in his enveloped and handed me three tickets. I said thank you but did not get his name or felt I thanked him enough. Hopefully he will read this and know that I am truly "thankful" for his great kindness. Sincerely, Thank you.

Pat's is the best by far hands down. Was great when I was a kid and is great today, when I took my daughter for the first time. She wanted to go back the next day!
